Bryan University Nursing Assistant Graduate Claudia Horton’s Drive to Help Others

Bryan University Nursing Assistant graduate Claudia Horton found our program after she made a career change because she’s driven to help others. She signed up for BU’s program while also pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at another institution.

“It’ll give me a boost into what the medical field is going to be like, so I can gain a little bit of experience, and I can give back to people and help people along my way, so when I transition into RN it’ll make it easier for me instead of me just going in and not knowing anything,” she said.

She always dreamed of being a nurse and as a single mom, she said her daughter really motivates her to follow her dreams.

“I was like, let me just go ahead and do something that’s going to actually make me happy. Let me stop waiting,” she said.

She was looking into programs when she came across Bryan University. She read the reviews, and when she reached out for more information, she was surprised by the reception she received.

“I was just blown away with how nice everyone was, how welcoming everyone was,” she said. “They just want you to be successful, and they’re going to give you all the tools that you need to be successful, and that’s why I’m so happy that I made this decision to come here.”

After she saw the newly built labs she said she knew it was the program for her.

“I just knew that this was it for me,” she said. “I don’t want to go to other schools and continue to look. My heart is set. I’ve seen how nice they were, how welcoming they were, how they had everything clean. The entire facility was clean, nice, and organized. I’m not going to look anymore.”

She said when she went through admissions, they made clear the importance of time management, and as a single mom, she knew she had to buckle down and ensure this was what she wanted to do. She said the support she felt from the school made all the difference.

“Bryan University worked with me. They gave me as much help as I possibly could get. They offered me time to come in extra days and make up if I ever needed to. They just pretty much were always there as a support system throughout the four weeks,” she said.

She liked that the program includes different ways of learning, including early time in the lab along with videos and clinicals.

Her advice for anyone considering the program is to go into it with a determined mindset, be prepared to practice, and have patience, especially as you go from the classroom setting to the clinical setting.

“Don’t sign off on something that you’re not going to be serious about, you know,” she said. “Slow down, take your time, and don’t rush. Everyone’s different, so the way one person likes something is not going to be the way another person likes it.”

She said clinicals helped her learn the flexibility you need to be able to transition from paper to patient. She said it made everything real for her.

“This is real. I’m really gonna really help these people. Clinicals really, really got me to the point that I’m like, this is more than just your paperwork and your skills at the school. You build a connection with the patients,” she said. “It was a great feeling knowing you’re helping somebody else. You’re actually using the skills that you learned from the school and helping someone with them.”

She said overall, she loved her experience at BU, how supported she felt during the program, and how it wasn’t just about passing a test, but about teaching good nursing assistants who are going to make a difference.

“The experience that I had was an amazing, great experience, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. I’m really thankful for what the school has done for me,” she said. “They really want good CNAs out there. They want CNAs that are going to do right for people and take care of people the right way.”
